Throughout 2024, I had the pleasure of working with the fantastic team at EI Travel and Nine Yards Design as a Lead Consultant on concept and design of Dublin's first Illusion Museum, the World of Illusion at Central Bank Plaza.
Drawing on my experience as the Curator of a previous exhibition at Science Gallery Dublin, ILLUSION, I was delighted to bring my knowledge and experience to the talented team at Nine Yards who did all of the heavy lifting, and were off to a fantastic start already.
Building out the several floors of the museum was a fun challenge. It means choosing pieces that will appeal to almost everybody. However, I always say that certain people like specific types of illusions more than others, so you need to cover all of your bases with the selection.
There are plenty of interactive and surprising pieces, but if you ask me, the most impressive is 'Die Falle' by Gregory Barsamian. We had Die Falle in ILLUSION several years ago, which departed on a global tour for many years, so it was a great treat to welcome it back to a permanent new home in Dublin.
It's a stroboscopic piece that plays on persistence of vision in our minds eyes and creates an incredible illusion of motion that has to be seen up close to believe.
You'll also see another persistence of vision piece called Columba - the sitting girl illusion, which, through a clever and simple use of lighting, you'll see the outline of a little girl sitting amongst an array of wires.
Additionally, you'll find balance-challenging vortex tunnels, infinity mirrors galore and several interactive pieces that are perfect for social media photos! Definitely add the World of Illusion museum to your list of fun things to do in Dublin for a visit, a first date, or a day out with friends.
Huge thanks to EI Travel and Nine Yards for bringing me on board - it was a pleasure!
